the goats are SO beautiful.
the goat milk coffee ice cream was amazing!
eating too much honey can make you sick, proverbs 25:16 contemporary english version, henrik reading us the proverbs again.
we expected that the barn clean up to be worse! after we set out fresh bedding and straw we enjoyed watching the goats roll around in it!
danielle really liked the fat goat.
we learned how distinguish between hay and straw.
we all milked buffy. delaney set the bar high with catching on right away, but we all followed well in her footsteps.

learning from uncle don and grandpa
uncle don's farm and personal farming accomplishments are so vast yet he still felt empty because God wasnt in his life. we were impressed by his faith and passion for God and his patience through difficult weather.
uncle don explained how the farming communities and way of life have been disrupted by modern conventional farming.
kudos to your monsanto protest uncle don!
grandpa has expereinced so much in the changing of farming techniques, technology, and way of life.
farming is just in the beebout blood!
thanks for the story of bringing a donkey to haiti grandpa!

blue gate and white breast pottery
we spent several hours retwining hay bales because of disintegrating twine.
we all have spectacular farmers tans, one that includes a hole.
weeds, lots and lots of weeds...
"how much longer will you enjoy being stupid fools"...proverbs 1:22a contemporary english version...henrik has been reading us random proverbs from this biblical translation.
the one woman band was pretty impressive...playing bass guitar with your foot, who knew?
sharon and carol are the model best friends and incredible business women. we loved their passion for teaching people.
delaney wore a full body suit during the honey harvesting demonstration.
we all ate so much delicious honey and jam as a snack that even though some of us bought some to take home we have no intention of eating any for several days.
apple pie jam is the best jam justin has ever had in his life. its just as good as an actual apple pie. in other words, jill is a "jam magician."
incredible three bean salad sean!
matt and pat, thanks for the stew!
jill told a scary story around the campfire while we stared at the stars.
its awesome that the beebouts are all mostly on the same land they were raised on and share so much with one another.

coyote run
several hours were spent freeing tomato vines from air choking weeds.
listened to the soundtrack to tommy and sang with par while weeding.
according to matt, justin made the most spectacular "birds nest" out of the electric wire from a fence he took down with delaney.
snapper! pat enjoyed the cool water but worried that something would get him.
we got ripped putting up fencing while sharp blades of grass cut our ankles.
got a screw lodged in one of the rear tires.
taz is delaney's new best friend.
purple peppers, green peppers, white tomatos, red tomatos, grass fed/grain finished burgers and minute steak, basil, hummus, raspberry pie...

dan-d
today we actually started farming!
we ate raw sweet corn in the fields while we picked from 6am until 8:30am. after breakfast we painted the barn, and cleared the path in the corn maze. after lunch most of us fell asleep on the floor in the living room. then we continued working in the maze and painting the barn while delaney cleaned out the chicken coop. before leaving we met and fed a calf.
we have been enjoying cooking all our own meals this week. we have been eating sustainable or organic as much as we can. cooking for one another has been fun and rewarding!
stay tuned for more fun tomorrow at coyote run farms!

pig cookies and electric shocks
on sunday july 25 we attended worship at Christ's Church, the church we are staying at this week. the service was quite different from what we are used to at home. here are some of the things we like:
interactive/discussion-based/lesson-like sermon
a lot of singing
eveyrone was really happy to have us here
splitting up and sitting at tables next to people we didn't know
variety in music
after worship we participated in a mini farm crawl visiting blue gate farm, dan-d farms, dairy air, and coyote run farms. here are the best parts of this farm crawl:
danielle got shocked by the electric fence...or was is the horse who shocked daniellle?
paul the goat who stuck his tongue out at us and made crazy noises
kids that tried to eat our shirts and nibbled on our fingers
pond swimming at blue gate farms
getting lucy the adorable jack russell terrier to warm up to us
lucy chasing blue everywhere she went
paddle boating on the pond
learning about how the farmers rotate crops and pastures
our entire time here we have been completely overwhelmed by the hospitality of the farmers and members of the church where we are staying.
ps...the group thinks henrik should be a pastor someday

the 1875 blacksmith who broke character
...and what did he talk about? the hangover.
we went to living history farms and there were people dressed up in period clothing to interact with guests and tell them about farming. we spent some time with ethan, the blacksmith, who made croquet wickets (sp?). then somehow we started talking about the movie the hangover. it was fun anyway.
kelly creamed henrik at an 1875 game of checkers.
we got an explanation of "dimpled corn" and it was so detailed that we cannot repeat it...but we can recognize the difference in corn if we see it!
about 25 baby pigs crawled all over each other in a pig sty. the runt was completely adorable!
and there were kittens sleeping all over the place.
favorite farm of the 4 farms? suvery says: 1900's farm.

a trip to the market
so we went to the des moines farmers market and the hardest thing to find was...lettuce.
we got a tip from blue gate farms that asian vendors miraculously had lettuce. eventually we found our lettuce and then we put it in the best tacos we have ever sacramentally eaten.
we never seemed to have the right directions to where we were going...how did we get lost in downtown des moines?
we sneak attacked several people to put clothespins on their shirts, or grocery bags. no sir, we are not pick pocketing....rather giving you something. a clothespin with our blog address on it.
here's the best food that we found at the market:
avacados
herb flavored lemonade
gourmet cupcakes
honey roasted peanut
blueberry rhubard jam
beef chub (beef and cheese in a "chub"....kinda like a sausage)
buying free range chicken breast from an amish guy was pretty cool too.
more tomorrow,
jeannine and the st lukes youth
ps did anyone know that bottled coca cola grows on trees in iowa?

food
what is it? where does it come from? how does it get from wherever it comes from to my dinner plate? these are questions i didn't really think that one would need to ask. but after reading "omnivore's dilemna" i got curious and starting asking. then when the youth i work with at st. luke's watched "food inc" and started asking the same questions i decided we needed to do some justice seeking work to answer them for ourselves.
so this morning we are going to knoxville, iowa to spend a week with farmers. this isn't a conventional "mission trip" but more of a "mission in reverse" trip. we don't presume that we can come in and "fix" anything, "make" anything, or actually help someone other than ourselves in any really significant way. rather, we plan on absorbing as much knowledge from the "farm crawl" farmers in the knoxville area as possible. we will talk with conventional farmers, organic farmers, and sustainable farmers. we will shop at the downtown des moines farmer's market for most of our food for the week and then cook all our meals together in order to explore for ourselves "what is food?" we will not stop at fast food restaurants on our journey to or from iowa, and we will avoid heavily processed foods as much as possible. because after all, as michael pollan has helped us discern, is processed food and fast food really food?
but most importantly, we will get our hands, shoes, and clothing dirty as we help out on four farms. this will be done as a way of saying "thank you" to the farmers of Dairy Air, Coyote Run Farm, Dan-D Farms, and Blue Gate Farm for sharing their knowledge of food and farming with us throughout the week.
if you've made your way to this blog because you were "tagged" at the farmer's market, we hope you go on this adventure with us throughout the week via this blog and then support the "farm crawl farmers" as much as possible.
blessings,
jeannine
